Blueberries are flowering plants in the genus Vaccinium, sect. Cyanococcus. The species are native only to North America. They are shrubs varying in size from 10 cm tall to 4 m tall. The smaller species are known as low bush blueberries and lager spices are regarded as high bush blueberries.

Growing blueberries

1. Blueberries grow best on a sunny site in sandy peat soil. They are commonly grown in heavy soils there is good aeration and drainage, high organic matter content. Organic matter is necessary as it increases the water-holding capacity and improves the aeration of soils and adequate moisture. Applying heavy mulch to the soil, would control growth of weeds and affect overall health of the plant.

2. Drip irrigation provides the plants with a more uniform application of water. Water is placed near the roots of plants and hence save the water. Drip irrigation minimizes the amount of foliage and fruit disease in comparison to overhead irrigation.

3. It is advisable to soak the roots for several hours before planting. Hole should be 18-20 inches deep X 18-20 inches wide.

4. Mix 1 cubic foot of peat moss with top soil until hole gets filled 4 inches from the top. Set the plant and cover its roots with remaining peat moss mix soil. In case of heavy soil add same amount of peat soil with the soil.

5. Apply 3-5 inches of mulch around the circle to the planted plant.

Maintenance of blueberries

In order to divert energy and add nutrients to foliage remove all the flowers and buds of the plant during first year. It is recommendable not to use fertilizer during first year as the roots of plants are sensitive.

Cultivate the plant before July in order to prevent the growth of weeds. Cultivate them up to 2 inches deeper to save roots from damaging. Do not use chloride or nitrate Fertilizers containing as they can they harm blueberry roots. Do not apply any fertilizer during transplanting. After flowering do not fertilize the plant as it could lead to winter injury.

During second year before flower in spring season apply ammonium sulfate to the plant.
